How a leader talks with the team

Short, regular and honest. How to keep a sales team informed, how to share bad news and how to listen.

Good communication in a team means that people know what is going on, what is expected of them and where to go with a question. Long meetings and many messages do not help with that.

Keep it short and regular

A short meeting every week at the same time works better than a long one when something goes wrong. People can plan for it, and problems come up while they are still small.

Say bad news early

Changes, problems and disappointments are easier to handle when people hear them early and from you. Say what happened, what it means for them and what happens next.

Listen as much as you speak

Ask the team what they see. People who talk to customers every day often notice first when something changes. Write down what you hear and come back with an answer.

One place for important things

Decide where important information lives, for example one group chat or one email each week. When news is spread across many places, people miss it.

Talk to people one by one

Group meetings are good for news. Personal questions, praise and problems belong in a one to one talk. A short private conversation often solves what a group discussion cannot.
