A sales team grows one person at a time, and every person changes the team a little. That is why it pays to think before you invite someone in.
Know who you are looking for
Write down what a good team member looks like for you. Describe a realistic person, with the qualities that matter most to you. Think about:
- how much time they can give each week,
- whether they like talking to people,
- whether they finish what they start.
Skills can be learned. Reliability and a friendly attitude are much harder to teach.
Be clear about what you offer
People join a team for different reasons: extra work, learning, company, a new start. Ask what they want and say honestly what you can offer. Promise only what you can deliver. Never promise money or quick results.
Make the first weeks easy
New people decide early whether they will stay. Give them a simple plan for the first month, a few small tasks they can finish, and a person to call with questions. Small early successes keep people going.
Keep the team together
A team stays together when people feel seen. Meet regularly, even briefly. Share what works. Celebrate effort as well as results. When someone struggles, talk to them early and in private.
Grow at a pace you can carry
Every new person needs your time. If you add people faster than you can support them, the newest ones get lost. A few people who are doing well are worth more than many who feel alone.
